Battlefield 2 Issue
« on: December 07, 2014, 09:21:05 AM »
I posted this on the pervious website a month ago, but thread got a little derailed for whatever reason.
Well, anyhow, I haven't found a solution to my little.. conundrum.
As the title says, I've got an issue with my BF2. It has slightly changed from the last time I tried to run it, but maybe that's for the better, as now when I start it up, I just get a black screen (as with other games I try to run, that were not made for Win7). Also, as with other games I try to run, that were not made for Win7, the black screen seems to be the only problem. I can clearly hear the sound/music in the background and I also clearly hear the clicky noise the mouse makes when it hovers over different menu options. (the same goes for GTA San Andreas, when I tried reinstalling it).

Thus far I have tried:
- Running it as admin
- Running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3
- Changing my desktop resolution to a lower one (1024x768)
- Running it in 640x480 screen resolution
- Running it in 256 colours

That, in addition to reinstalling it a whole bunch of times.
Honestly, I don't think I'll get BF2 to run unless I reinstall Windows altogether, which isn't something that I want to do at this stage. Might as well just wait till I get a laptop at the end of this school year and just install it there.

Alternatively, as plan B, if I want to play a realistic FPS, what would you guys say about ArmA 3?

VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3

and make sure your settings have this in the box

in the target put this in and apply  "X:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1   "X" is the drive where  bf2 is installed

Ah, the old black screen problem. Do you have TeamViewer installed on your PC?
If yes, shut it down and try again.
If no, try press Alt+Enter when you get the black screen. This forces BF2 to windowed mode and you can access the options and look for "Run in windowed borderless" if there is an option for it, otherwise you can just google "BF2 windowed borderless".

Alright, after messing about with it and some other stuff, I got it to work! And exactly as I want it to.
TL;DR - Thanks a lot, mates! It's all fine now!

The first thing I did was all that Entra recommended here. It took me waaay longer than it should have that these are the properties of the shortcut and not the actual game app in the folder..  ::) Tried it also with different resolutions, but still no results. After that I tried Alt+Enter as Trigger suggested. (no, I haven't had TeamViewer for a long time now, so that couldn't be it) Alt+Enter didn't do anything. Still had the black screen and still could hear sound.

But this got me thinking that it should work in windowed mode, as Trigger said, so I switched
...\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1
to
...\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 0
which put it in windowed mode on startup.

Then surprise, surprise! It actually worked!

This is no way to play the game, though, so I switched some options about and got here

Not much better, but still better. At least I don't have to play with binoculars.

So after about 10 minutes of messing to see which resolution will be best for a windowed mode, I just randomly decided to see if for some strange reason fullscreen would work this time around. So I quit the game and launched it from Steam, which to my even greater surprise worked!
And this is how after some tinkering I ended up with a functioning Battlefield 2.

Thanks again, guys!  :D

Yes. I run the game through Steam so it shouldn't even launch if the latest patch isn't installed.

Errrm, no? Is that a mod (or were you just asking whether bf2 has been revived?)
If it's the latter, I honestly don't know.
A friend of mine got me into PR (Project Reality), which is tonnes of fun if you're into that sort of thing, of course. So that's probably the main and maybe only reason I reinstalled it.

Thanks, Entra! Bookmarked. I might check that out eventually, though, these days I am just mostly playing PR. But if I do feel like playing vanilla bf2, I'll now know where to look. :)
